Architectural achievements have made the city famous, earning recognition as one of Sri Lanka’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Ruwanweli maha Seya (Ruwanweliseya) is one of the most venerated Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka built by the great king Dutugamunu who reigned from 137BC to 119BC from Anuradhapura. Ruwanweli Maha Seya is not the largest neither the oldest of the stupas erected in Anuradhapura, but this is the most venerated by the Buddhists surpassing all other great stupas. It has the most imposing collection of relics of Gautama Buddha than was ever enshrined in any other dagaba in the island. According to Mahavamsa, on the Buddha’s 3rd visit to the island, he finally went to Anuradhapura where the Meghawana would be established and alighted on the spot where the Sacred Bo Tree would be planted and also visited site that the Great Thupa, Ruwanweli Seya would be established and meditated at the site. On its summit are the foundations of the Royal Palace, Water Tanks to supply water and all other buildings and at the edges the guardhouses. On one of the stairways the only known ancient work of Sinhala secular painting survived in the form of Frescoes of 21 life sized damsels still shining in their original colours. After breakfast, Proceed to Ambekke Temple and Kandy Temple of tooth Relic.
Tucked away in the peripheries of Kandy is one of the most beautiful medieval monuments in the island, and most possibly in the world. The Embekke Temple was built in 1371 by King Wickrama Bahu III and is dedicated to god Kataragama. A shroud of myths and legends cover the temple. It is associated with Princess Hena Kanda Biso Bandara, who was born of a beli fruit and later became consort to Wickrama Bahu. She was an ardent devotee of Kataragama, and it is said in legend that that god made her his consort in the afterlife. The temple is made up of the Wedasitina Maligawa where the deity resides, the Digge (called the ‘dancing hall’) and Hewisi Mandapaya (‘drummers’ hall’). The rectangular digge is the most impressive feature of Embekke. The hall is made up entirely out of wood, down to the very nails. The majority of woodcarvings that essentially make up Embekke’s great glory are to be found on the wooden capital pillars, but they blossom out of the wood on beams, rafters, doorways, and doors as well. Altogether, there are 514 exquisite carvings covering the digge.
A great mix of day-to-day figures, mythical beings and plants as well as elegantly chiseled animals abound. There is the carving of the sneezing face (Kimbihi Moona), the double headed eagle, dancing women, mother with child, wrestlers and soldiers.
The stylised images, deftly carved, capture amazingly intricate detail, and are full of life. A huge wooden pin, called ‘Madol Kurupawa’, holds all the 26 rafters at the hipped end of the roof of the dancing hall or Digge. This is a remarkable example of medieval carpentry. A compartment called Antharalaya houses treasures from the Gampola kingdom, including a pair of tusks donated by the same Wickrama Bahu who built the temple and a palanquin given to King Rajasinha II by the Dutch.
KANDY, the hill capital is another World Heritage Site. It was the last stronghold of the Sinhalese Kings during the Portuguese, Dutch and British rule and finally ceded to the British in 1815 after an agreement. To the Buddhists of Sri Lanka and the World, Kandy is one of the most sacred sites as it is the home of the “Dalada Maligawa” – Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. Close by are the remains of the Royal Palace (“Maha Wasala”), “Palle
Wasala”- where the Queens stayed-now used for the National Museum, “Meda Wasala” where other close relatives lived, Audience Hall, Natha Devala and Vishnu Devala are situated close by. The Bathing Pavilion (“Ulpenge”) is by the Lake and in the Centre of the lake is the Island called “Kirisamudraya” (Milk White Ocean) used by the kings as
the summerhouse. Today it is the centre of Buddhism, Arts, Crafts, Dancing, Music and Culture. Visitors can see these Dance & Music at the daily Cultural Performances held at several places in the city

In Sinhalese, Diyaluma or Diya Haluma means “rapid flow of water” or may be translated as “liquid light” Diyaluma is the setting of the folklore about a tragedy involving a young chieftain who had been banished to the highlands and the attempt by his betrothed to join. As all the passes were guarded the young man let down a rope of twisted creepers over the escarpment, as she was hauled up she was dashed against the rocks and died.
